Maintenance and Care for Used Espresso Machines

Daily Maintenance for Your Espresso Machine

  1. Steam Wand Care: Always wipe down the steam wand after use and purge it before and after each use. This prevents obstructions from dry milk and bacteria buildup.
  2. Group Head Cleaning: Flush the group head before each round of espressos to remove coffee oils and old grounds that can affect flavor.
  3. Fresh Cleaning Cloths: Replace cleaning cloths two to three times a day. Wash them at high temperatures with detergent.
  4. End-of-Day Routine:
  • Backflush: Scrub group heads with a brush, use coffee machine detergent and a blind filter, and repeat until the water runs clear. Pull several espresso shots afterward to remove any detergent residue.
  • Steam Wand: Remove the tip and soak it in warm water and detergent for at least 20 minutes or overnight.
  • Draining Hose: Clean it to avoid clogs and buildup of coffee grounds.
  • Portafilters, Filter Basket, and Drip Tray: Ensure these are thoroughly cleaned.

Monthly Maintenance for Your Espresso Machine

  1. Shower Screens and Portafilter Baskets: Change these every one to two months to prevent leaks between the portafilter and the group head.
  2. Water Quality Awareness: Be mindful of your water quality. Mineral-heavy water can lead to a calcified steam tank. To avoid this, schedule regular machine decalcification with your distributor or manufacturer.
  3. Steam Tank Maintenance: Drain the steam tank every six months to ensure optimal performance.

Annual Maintenance for Your Espresso Machine

Replace these small parts annually to prevent major issues:

  1. Steam and Hot Water Valve O-Rings
  2. Shoulder Bolt Shims
  3. Expansion Valve (prevents leaks and temperature loss in the tank)
  4. Anti-Suction Valve
  5. Brew Actuator Bearing
  6. Waste Pipe
  7. Portafilter Baskets (check if replacement is necessary)

Though replacing these parts may seem costly, it's cheaper than having to close your coffee shop for repairs.
